Motivational Music Monday: The Last Monday of February 2014

This morning, while at the gym, I heard an old song that I thought would be great for Motivational Music Monday. The song always stops me in my tracks as it was very popular the first fall I was away from home, in the Air Force. A good friend and myself would hit every club on the Mississippi Gulf Coast that fall. Every club would be playing “Mambo #5” by Lou Bega.

What a great song. Even now (as in this morning in the locker room at the gym) I get to dancing when I hear this song. I was all set to post this song until… Continue reading

10 Great Uses for Apple Cider Vinegar

I have been using Apple Cider Vinegar for many years as a great alternative to many household items. It was only recently that I discovered that raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar (abbreviated as ACV) can be used in many other ways.

Used since 400 BC, there are many modern ways to incorporate Apple Cider Vinegar into your daily life from beauty care, household cleaning, and cooking. Below are 10 of the greatest and most uncommon uses for Apple Cider Vinegar that you may or may not have heard of. For best results use organic, unpasteurized Apple Cider Vinegar with “the Mother”. Crockpot Spicy Tomato Soup

Crockpot Spicy Tomato Soup

It seems like this winter is lasting so much longer than winters of the past which means cold and flu season is sticking around longer as well. This winter, since the husband and I are following a Paleo lifestyle, we have ended up eating vastly diverse and hearty meals that include fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and coconut oil–many we had never tried before this year.

In winters past, I would devour bowls of canned soups. Soup just seems to be my winter go-to quick meal. To be honest, this year I have not been able to have as much soup as the canned soup is filled with sodium, preservatives, and questionable ingredients.

So I have been on a search for interesting soup recipes. This recipe is a crowd pleaser for sure. This spicy tomato soup is so easy to prepare and cooks on low in the crockpot in as little as 6 hours. Continue reading

Motivational Music Monday: Staying Alive

Without giving away my age, this song has been a part of my life (literally) since I was born. I remember my mom listening to this LP on our old Kenwood record player and dancing around to it in the living room. Now, my boy dances around the kitchen to it.

These days I use this song mostly for running. With 104 beats per minute (bpm) I can get a pretty good runners stride going. Although I have been known to try to keep the beat and have ended up with shin splints. But that’s neither here nor there.

Common Food Cravings

Have you ever changed your way of eating and one day, BAM you are hit with a craving out of left field? What about needing to have foods so badly that you drove out of your way to get it? Have you woken up with a craving for foods that you have not had in years?Scenarios like these are perfect examples of vitamin and mineral deficiencies that many of us suffer from.

During my last two pregnancies, I craved raw almond butter like crazy. Through research I found that certain deficiencies cause certain cravings. Cravings are different from hunger. Hunger is controlled by the stomach, whereas craving are controlled by our brains and our body’s chemistry.

Below is a chart with the most common cravings I have come across in my research, the deficiency associate with each craving and all the foods you can eat to restore your body back to optimal function.
